Although many experts predicted numbers to fall at the 2011 World Series of Poker in the aftermath of Black Friday, they were most certainly wide of the mark, with overall numbers at the 2011 WSOP stacking up quite favourably. It remains to be seen whether or not they will at least be right about the WSOP Main Event.

Despite the dip in entrants, the first days poker during the WSOP Main Event was still a star studded affair. Former WSOP Main Event champions such as Doyle Brunson, Jerry Yang, Greg Raymer and Johnny Chan were in attendance, as were WPT commentator Vince van Patten and host of professional poker players, such as Maria Ho, Vanessa Selbst, Isaac Haxton, Annette Obrestad, Scott Montgomery and Eli Elezra.

The day was not without controversy, particularly due to the antics of James Boyle, who seemed to be doing his best to upset all the other participants. At one point, he held up a hand between Rayan Nathan and Gavin Smith, where both players had moved all in. Boyle chose to finish arguing with an attendant for several minutes before looking at his cards and deciding to fold.

Whoever emerges victorious from the tournament will claim $777,928 in addition to the gold WSOP bracelet.
