‘Elky’ takes first place in the European Poker Tour High Roller event, beating 57 other players to take home €525,000.

The European Poker Tour Grand Final started with a bang this weekend with some of poker’s biggest names taking to the felts to contest the €25,000 buy-in High Roller event.

Organisers of the seventh EPT Grand Final made the decision to allow the High Roller to kick start the tournament, taking place before the main event itself. And what an inspired decision that was, as fans were treated to a host of stars made up a who’s who of the poker world.

The event was won by Betrand “ElkY” Grospellier, who staged a dramatic comeback to clinch victory and walk away with over half a million euro in winnings. He beat off a pack of players which included plenty of quality and talent in order to secure his second victory in this event.

58 players started the event, and the competitor list included the likes of last year’s event winner Vanessa Rousso and one of the most recognizable faces in high-stakes poker, Tom Dwan. The American arrived seven hours late, and will have been disappointed to not make it to the final table.

America’s Galen Hall went into the final as chip leader with 798,000, closely followed by Benny Spindler with 710,000. The rest of the final table was made up of Juha Helppi of Finland (707,000 chips), David Sands (207,000), Bertrand Grospellier (165,000) Vanessa Rousso (146,000), Alex Repik (141,000) and Peter Jetten (63,000).

The action on the final table was dramatic and full of twists and turns. Early on Hall went head-to-head with Spindler. Both had massive stacks but only Spindler would survive to tell the tale.

He went on to go to war with ElkY, entering the battle in the strongest position with 2 million chips to ElkY’s 700,000. ElkY held his nerve and began to gather his chips as chaos ensued at the table.

In the end Spindler elected to call and flipped over K 9 for trip nines but found he was up against a full house as ElkY revealed 9 4 . Spindler took the €316,000 runner-up prize, whilst ElkY pocketed the cool half a million euro.

ElkY will now turn his attention to the EPT Grand Final Main Event, where he will play in day 1b of the tournament, which carries a first place prize of €1.5 million.
